As omicron surges across the country and beyond, experts want you to know what masks work best.

“Cloth masks and gaiters and some of the other things, bandanas and homemade bandanas around their face are not effective against omicron. That is clear,” Worcester Medical Director and Director of Pediatric Trauma at UMass Memorial Health Dr. Michael Hrish said. “You need to have a decent mask.”

Most health experts now believe that the masks that provide the best protection against omicron are N95 masks or KN95 masks. Surgical masks rank second, however, Hirsh recommended individuals wear two surgical masks.
