Mainly sunny. High 77F. Winds WNW at 10 to 20 mph..

Mostly clear skies. Low near 50F. Winds NW at 10 to 15 mph.

Minnesota Timberwolves player Anthony Edwards is excellent as the bad-sport bad guy in one of those inspiring, taking-a-chance-on-a-long shot sports movies. Adam Sandler goes low-key as a desperate scout who discovers a Spanish player (Utah Jazz's Juancho Hernangomez, good in a complex role). It's not always clear why he's a long shot, since Hernangomez plays the almost mythical "big man with a guard's handle," and it takes guts to set one of these movies in Philadelphia, home of "Rocky." But the behind-the-scenes basketball details are convincing and there's just enough grit to balance the uplift. Netflix

World Trade Organization members have reached a string of deals and commitments aimed to limit overfishing, broaden production of COVID-19 vaccines in the developing world and reform a 27-year-old trade body that has been back on its heels in recent years. WTO Director-General Nzogi Okonjo-Iweala concluded the WTO’s ministerial conference by trumpeting a new sense of cooperation at a time when the world has faced crises like growing food insecurity, war in Ukraine and a once-in-a-century pandemic that has taken millions of lives. Okonjo-Iweala said Friday the agreements will make a difference in people's lives and demonstrate the WTO's capability to respond to emergencies.

SEATTLE — The storyline is simple, familiar and expected:

Virginia lawmakers are set to convene in Richmond for a one-day session to consider Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s proposed changes to the state budget. Lawmakers sent the governor a compromise spending plan June 1, and he has returned it to them asking for several dozen amendments. Many of those proposals are likely to face opposition in the Democrat-controlled Senate. Friday's session comes as the governor and General Assembly are creeping toward a June 30 deadline to pass the two-year spending plan. It would take effect July 1.

Legendary civil rights leader Bayard Rustin and three other men will have their sentences vacated posthumously. They were sentenced to work on a chain gang in North Carolina after launching the first of the “freedom rides” to challenge Jim Crow laws, which mandated segregation on buses. Friday's ceremony vacating their sentences is scheduled to take place at the Orange County Courthouse in Hillsborough. Rustin was a pioneer of the civil rights movement and an adviser to the late Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. He was instrumental in organizing the 1963 March on Washington.

Maria Bulanova was surprised she could be recruited to the bowling team at Vanderbilt University “all the way from Russia.” It was a chance for Tze-Han Lin to go from Taiwan to the University of Oregon to play golf on a full scholarship. Both of them and many other international athletes playing college sports in the United States had little sense of Title IX when they were younger. But the federal law has opened the door for thousands of female athletes to get an education in the United States.

Mike Trout continued to torment Seattle with his 48th and 49th career home runs against his division foe, Shohei Ohtani tossed six innings of three-hit ball and the Los Angeles Angels beat the Mariners 4-1. Trout has feasted on Seattle pitching throughout his career and this season appears to be no different. In the first meeting between the teams in 2022, Trout hit a pair of two-run home runs to account for all of the Angels’ offense. Trout has 18 homers on the season and 30 in his career in Seattle, the most of any visiting player at T-Mobile Park.

China has launched its third aircraft carrier, the first such ship to be designed and built entirely within the country. State media reports said the 003 new-generation aircraft carrier christened Fujian left its drydock at a shipyard in Shanghai on Friday morning. State broadcaster CCTV showed assembled navy personnel standing beneath the massive ship as water jets sprayed over its deck and multi-colored streamers flew and colorful smoke was released. The launch comes as China seeks to extend the range and power of its navy. Equipped with the latest weaponry and aircraft-launch technology, the ship’s capabilities are thought to rival those of Western carriers, as Beijing seeks to turn its navy, already the world’s largest, into a multi-carrier force.

A standoff between a Republican-dominated county commission and New Mexico’s Democratic secretary of state over the commission’s conspiracy-fueled refusal to certify election results comes to a head Friday, the state’s certification deadline. The showdown is providing a stark example of the chaos that election experts have warned about as those who promote the lie that former President Donald Trump was cheated out of reelection seek to populate local election offices and the usually low-profile boards that certify the results. The governing commission in Otero County has refused to certify the local results from the June 7 primary, even though it has identified no problems with the voting.

A Russian-owned superyacht seized by the United States has arrived in Honolulu Harbor flying an American flag. The U.S. last week won a legal battle in Fiji to take the $325 million vessel and immediately sailed it to Hawaii. The FBI has linked the Amadea to the Russian oligarch Suleiman Kerimov. The U.S. said Kerimov secretly bought the Cayman Island-flagged vessel last year through various shell companies. The ship became a target of Task Force KleptoCapture, launched in March to seize the assets of Russian oligarchs to put pressure on Russia to end the war in Ukraine. The vessel is about the length of a football field. It arrived in Honolulu on Thursday.

Costa Rica has been reeling from unprecedented ransomware attacks disrupting everyday life in the Central American nation for the last two months. The situation is raising questions about the United States' role in protecting friendly nations from cyberattacks at a time when Russian-based criminal gangs are targeting less developed countries in ways that could have major global repercussions. Experts believe developing countries like Costa Rica are ripe targets for ransomware gangs, which have stopped going after “big-game” targets after several high-profile attacks last year, including a pipeline attack that led to major gas shortages in parts of the U.S.

Australia’s new Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says he will take advice on whether to accept President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's invitation to visit Ukraine during an upcoming European trip. Albanese will attend a NATO meeting in Spain at the end of this month. Albanese said on Friday there are “security issues” to be considered before adding a stop in Ukraine. But he appreciates the spirit in which the invitation was extended. Australia is the largest contributor outside NATO to Ukraine's defense. European leaders are increasingly visiting Ukraine’s capital Kyiv by rail from Poland. Zelenskyy addressed the Australian Parliament by video in late March. Australia responded to his appeal for armored vehicles and tougher sanctions against Russia.

After the severe flooding, business owners in some of the gateway towns leading to Yellowstone National Park are trying to figure out how they’ll make ends meet without a steady stream of tourists. June is typically one of Yellowstone’s busiest months. Officials say the park’s southern part, which features Old Faithful, could reopen as soon as next week. But the north end, which includes Tower Fall and the bears and wolves of Lamar Valley, could stay closed much longer, perhaps the rest of the summer. Officials are hoping Gardiner, Red Lodge and other small communities can draw visitors even without access to the park. But some business owners are growing frustrated at the cancellations.

BOSTON — The trophy case is now complete.

BOSTON — The ball hit the court just outside of the paint when Stephen Curry darted to it, beating Jayson Tatum to the rebound.

A Panamanian judge has acquited 39 people charged in the Panama Papers case, including the key figures,  Jurgen Mossack and Ramón Fonseca. Judge Baloísa Marquínez Morán ruled Thursday that the prosecution did not prove that the law firm Mossack Fonseca handled funds from Brazil. The Panama Papers include a collection of 11 million secret financial documents that illustrated how some of the world’s richest people hide their money. The records were leaked in 2016, and the repercussions prompted the resignation of the prime minister of Iceland and brought scrutiny to the leaders of Argentina and Ukraine, Chinese politicians and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

When Jayson Tatum made consecutive baskets to cap a game-opening Boston blitz, TD Garden was at its absolute loudest. It sure got quiet in a hurry. So did Tatum. After climbing back to the top of the Eastern Conference, the Celtics fell flat in the latter stages of the NBA Finals. The Golden State Warriors won the final three games, winning the title with a 103-90 victory in Game 6 on Thursday night. It was the first three-game skid for the Celtics since December. Tatum finished with just 13 points on 6-for-18 shooting.

BOSTON — After missing the playoffs in back-to-back seasons, the Warriors’ championship window appeared to be shutting.

The church shooting Thursday in Alabama that killed two people and wounded another is just the latest recent high-profile shooting in May and June. The most prominent were a racist attack that killed 10 Black people at a supermarket in Buffalo, New York, and a gunman who killed 19 children and two adults in Uvalde, Texas, which was the deadliest school shooting in nearly a decade. Others include the attack on a heavily Taiwanese congregation in California, an attack on a medical office in Oklahoma and a gun melee in Philadelphia.

Mark Canha hit a two-run homer and the New York Mets threw out the potential tying run at the plate in the ninth inning to preserve a 5-4 comeback victory over the scuffling Milwaukee Brewers. After both starting pitchers exited with injuries in the middle innings, the Mets took advantage of a costly throwing error by first baseman Rowdy Tellez to score the go-ahead run in the eighth. Christian Yelich homered for the Brewers, who lost two of three in the series and have dropped 10 of 12 overall.

PHILADELPHIA — It appears that James Harden will get paid ... but at a discount for the 76ers.

WASHINGTON — If you’re feeling a surge of optimism over the Phillies’ chances of finally returning to the playoffs, it’s probably because they’ve reeled off 11 wins in 13 games since firing the manager. Or maybe it’s because they’re averaging 6.4 runs per game in June.
